STATEMENT

The collages, paintings, and drawings I create stem from an idea of transformation. How many times can the same image be reused? How far can it get from its original state? How many times can one image transform? Using floral forms, internal landscapes and physical boundaries, these pieces express a range of personal experiences and playful experiments. I manipulate and translate aestheticized floral forms and landscapes through overlapping imagery and complex patterns as a means of making the images more specific and simultaneously fantastical. Using color, form, and reference of the natural world, I navigate viewer expectations as a way to begin neutralizing them and expanding the definition of self. I use gestural lines and repetitive forms to confuse and complicate internal space,  and re-contextualize the representational and emotional landscapes. Searching for the ability to make a viewer pause, these works are my way to gain a sense of agency by curating something puzzling that the viewer has to make sense of, rather than assuming anything. Celebration, acceptance, confusion, and anxiety are all states that my paintings and collages convey. The allure of color, shape, and the natural world engages the viewer visually and personally, allowing for the definition of self, self-expression, and self-experience to expand.
